
Hong Kong Schools Putonghua Competition
The 5th Kindergarten and Primary School Putonghua Contest has been successfully concluded on May 1, 2010. The prize presentation ceremony held right after the final was well-attended by over 650 students, parents and teachers. They all had a joyful and memorable moment. Well Develop has sponsored the prizes for the winners. 581 students (434 from kindergartens and 147 from primary schools) have participated in the 3 day preliminaries which were held on April 17, 18 and 25. Out of which 136 students were selected to compete in the final. Well Develop sponsored softwares were presented to the 27 winners, first and second runner-ups.

Four major state-owned enterprises and the Bank of Beijing signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Hong Kong based ATV. “Quasi-shareholder” Wing Fung Holdings Chairman Wang Zheng , said he is planning to apply for a permit set up a Mandarin cable TV channel targeting at the audience of mainland China. Mr. Wang ambitiously announced that his aim is to make the whole world watch ATV which will be positioned as the Asia’s CNN. (Sing Tao Daily reported)

Partly because Fr. Hong Kong Police Department purchases license of NextSpeak Mandarin TTS for training purpose. There is a increasing population of Mandarin spoken citizen and expatriates in Hong Kong. The use of Putonghua has become a practical need in police duties.
Many police officers learn Putonghua through multi-media or private tuition. In view of the needs, the Civil Service Training and Development Institute of Hong Kong government now provides Putonghua package through the “Cyber Learning Centre Plus” for self-learning through multi-media, , and various units in the Police Force continue providing “basic” and “job-related” Putonghua training for frontline officers, which suit their shift work.

The Central Policy Unit of the Hong Kong Government (CPU) purchased licenses of NextSpeak Mandarin TTS for use in the office. NextSpeak Mandarin TTS is the Mandarin text-to-speech software that helps government officials in their daily communications and speeches whenever Mandarin is used.
The CPU of the Hong Kong Government pointed out the poor Mandarin proficiency level in Mandarin speaking among government officials and thus negatively affecting Hong Kong’s image in maintaining her status as an international metropolis. The inferior level of spoken Mandarin has already caused the development of better relationships with provincial, municipal or city governments of the Mainland China.
